Keep Calm And…Work From Home!

First, before we get into the meat of this post, I want to apologize for the prolonged absence from this space. Let’s just say there is a lot going on, and some new and exciting projects are on their way to you. Some of that project work may or may not have pulled me in a different direction, but you will have to stay tuned to find out what all is coming. What I can say is, with what little I know, there is plenty to be excited about. Keep watching this space for more information as it becomes available!

So, the first few months of 2020 have started out quite interestingly, haven’t they? At this point, I would gather a good number of you reading this (assuming you are reading around when it will be initially published, in March of 2020) are probably predominantly working remote. Many companies are pushing employees to work from home as much as they can, while we come to grips with the rapidly spreading Covid-19 (aka, novel coronavirus, among other names). On top of workers being sent home for some time, many schools around the United States are shutting down for at least a week or two. Some have already declared themselves to be shut down till late April at the earliest. On top of that, we’ve also seen basically every major professional sports league either cancel or suspend their seasons. It’s an unprecedented time in our lives, for sure.

So…working from home sounds awesome, right? As someone who has been able to work from home, in some form or another, since I started in IT back in 1999, it can be a really wonderful option (even if it can also be a way for you to work more and more, if you aren’t careful). But for every person who has had regular experience working remote, there are still plenty of us to whom remote work is a bit of a foreign concept. On top of that, there are plenty of us who may work remotely, but there’s plenty of room for improvement. So what’s the point?

Well, Active Expert recently dropped a micro course. The topic? How to handle working remotely.

Now, I know what some of you are thinking. How hard is it to work from home? Turn on laptop, connect to VPN/work network, work. It’s easy, right? That may be, but being home is a whole different animal, especially if you had been working in a corporate office for the majority of your time prior to this current pandemic. There are plenty of do’s and don’ts to be aware of…and plenty of tips and tricks that even a seasoned remote worker can benefit from.

My own personal quick tips?

  • Have a routine and stick to it. Keep things as close to what you’d do if you were in the office. That means get up at a consistent and regular time. Use your “commute” time for yourself (don’t always give the company a couple extra free hours!).
  • Maintain social interaction. Use chat, video, phone calls and the like to make sure you still talk to your team regularly.
  • Minimize distractions! If you have kids, make sure you have some isolation between your work space and where ever they may be. Don’t spend your day watching daytime soaps, either!

It’s awesome that so many have the ability to work remotely. Let the wonderful trainers involved with this course help you optimize that experience to ensure you are the best remote worker you can be!
